The idea of a Breakfast Club was the inspiration of Ken Dilks,
then a member of Havertown Rotary, who in 1978 was making up in Fort Myers,
Florida. He was intrigued by a 7:00 A.M. Rotary Breakfast meeting.
Later, Ken read in The Rotarian Magazine that a new
club would be allowed within the territorial limits of an existing club with
the senior club's permission.
At first the idea was discussed and
rejected by the Havertown Club, but later they realized their membership would
not be adversely affected. In fact, a morning meeting would probably increase
Rotary membership by bringing in those businessmen who had objections to giving
up an evening to attend club meetings. The membership of the Havertown Club
then voted to sanction a new club.
Those who took Ken up on his idea were
Robert Poole, District Governor 1980-1981, and Herman Bloom, District Governor
1981-1982, as well as Havertown Club President 1981-1982, Robert Burton. John
Tatarian was asked to serve as the club's first president.
Rotary International chartered the Haverford Township Club on
September 29, 1981 with twenty- nine members. This breakfast club was the first
such club in District 7450.
A charter night
banquet was held December 12, 1981 at the Falcon House with the sponsoring
Havertown Club. Over 275 people attended. This occasion was very successful and
festive.
